“What is a good ‘first date’ wine”? This was the question I was recently asked by Patrick, a twenty-one year old college student, who explained that he wants to invite a young lady over for dinner, but he’s on a tight budget and doesn’t want to spend a lot of money on a bottle of wine in case it doesn’t work out. And to be totally fair, the proverbial door swings both ways and applies to any single women who wants to find a wine that fits the same bill. You want to get just the right bottle of wine to impress your date, but not break the bank in the process. The wines should not only be reasonably priced (read ‘inexpensive’), but they need to be versatile enough to appeal to a broad range of tastes. And good enough to secure a second date.
