Portugal is SO much more than just Port. It is now the 7th largest wine producing country in the world and one of the largest wine-growing regions in Portugal — taking up one-third of the country — is the sun-drenched rolling hills of Alentejo, located in the southern half of the country. Thanks to investments in winemaking equipment and techniques, as well as modern irrigation methods, the quality of both white and red wines from the region have dramatically improved.

DC Examiner September 30, 2010 – Fall into fall with Pinot Noir – The Vine Guy

Looking for a wine to slip into fall with? How about Pinot Noir?

Not as dark and brooding as syrah or zinfandel and not as chewy or tannic as cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir is delicate yet versatile. It pairs well with salmon, duck, and most game. Wonderful expressions of pinot noir can be found in several countries around the world, including New Zealand and the US, particularly California and Oregon.

Rieslings to Cool Off With – July 30, 2010

At just $12, the 2008 Rudy Wiest Riesling from the Mosel Valley in Germany has notes of tangy green apples and lemon/lime fruit. It’s a perfect match with crab cakes. The 2008 Tamar Ridge Riesling from Australia ($20) has flavors of lemon, lime and pineapple with hints of tropical fruit and a touch of sweetness on the finish. It’s a good choice to pair with spicier Asian fare. The 2008 Chateau Ste. Michelle Eroica Riesling from the Columbia Valley in Washington State ($25) has fresh, slightly spicy flavors of orange, white peach, lemon and lime. It’s a nice, dry-style Riesling to pair with chicken or pork. Other wines to try: 2009 Stratford Riesling, Martinborough New Zealand ($20); Trimbach Cuvee Frederic Emile 2002 ($59)
